Crunch time in NPL
By AINSLEY WALTERS, Staff Reporter MOVING AWAY: Rivoli's Nigerian midfielder Mobi Oparaku (left) moves away from Reno's defender Robert Haughton in the second half of Sunday's Wray and Nephew National Premier League (NPL) second round game at the Frome Sports Ground. Rivoli won 2-1 to qualify for next week's end of round final. - Paul Reid 'DO OR DIE', 'last chance', call it what you may, no quarter will be given in tomorrow afternoon's final return round of the Wray and Nephew Premier League preliminaries. Win, win, win that's the word from coaches of second-round final contenders Tivoli on 21 points, Village (19) and Portmore (19), hoping to join already-qualified Rivoli in this Sunday's bonus final.
Unbeaten streak Tivoli, riding an unbeaten seven-game streak, are at home against Waterhouse, appearing to have the hand best capable of taking them into the final. However, a loss to Waterhouse and a three-pointer either way between Village-Portmore would disintegrate their chances. In Trelawny, Village and Portmore, who both squandered 1-0 leads against their respective oppositions Sunday, lock horns at Elliston Wakeland, burning to get the better of each other while hoping Waterhouse inflict serious damage on Tivoli at Railway Oval. Should 21-point Tivoli lose at home, nothing but a win can help 19-pointers Portmore or Village in what amounts to a cut-throat game. Village have a second round plus-nine goal difference to Portmore's plus-eight in addition to home advantage but the visitors have been enjoying road trips this season, winning all of 10 games away from Neita Park. "We always do well down there," Portmore coach Lenny Hyde told STAR Sports last night, referring to the team his side beat 6-4 on aggregate in the semi-finals on their way to the Premiership title last season.
Confident "We've confidence away. I don't know why. We've got to go down there for three points and we've to score more than one. I am not comfortable with a 1-0 lead," said the Portmore coach, no doubt referring to Sunday's game when his team let in Denton Vidal at Ferdie Neita Park two minutes from time. Village coach Lloyd Williams admitted his team escaped from Waterhouse with a 1-1 draw Sunday but believes the bigger field at Elliston Wakeland will do the trick. "The game was fast-paced with opponents coming on fast," he said. "Most of the players' games were way off and we did well to come away with a point," he said, referring to Sunday's match when Warren Ukah's 22nd minute goal was cancelled by Uche Chinyere in the 27th. When the teams met in the first round, Portmore lost 0-1 off Marlon Fletcher's stoppage time goal, a torrid strike from outside the area which goalie Shawn Sawyers parried but couldn't keep from falling behind him and bouncing into goal. However, Village and Waterhouse's efforts could very well be in vain if coach Glendon 'Admiral' Bailey's Tivoli take out Waterhouse at Railway. Bailey is still taking it one game at a time, not wanting to scare his side into choking against dangerous Waterhouse. "All games are important," he said. "Yes, a win would take us to the final but there's still the third round to come. We're going to play our normal football and if we do that well, we'll get a good result." Injured Christopher Nicholas, out for Tivoli's last three games, remains doubtful as well as Steve Green and Marvin Morgan but national defender Ian 'Pepe' Goodison could be back for the big clash.
Hoping for form Andrew 'Rusty' Chisholm has made use of Roland Dean's national Under-23 trip, netting in Tivoli's last two games and Bailey is hoping his form holds out. For Waterhouse, assistant coach Barry Brown said whereas Chinyere has scored in his team's last two games, he's looking to Kevin Lamey to come good against Tivoli. Both players scored when Waterhouse beat Tivoli 2-1 in the first round. "We're hoping for a repeat performance," Brown remarked. Elsewhere around the league, second round leaders Rivoli are hunting Harbour View's scalp at the Prison Oval, hoping a win would boost their confidence ahead of Sunday's final. However, 17-goal Fabian Taylor has been on fire and will be hard to contain with his team atop the league. In the lower half of the standings, there'll be a lot of jostling among relegation-threatened teams ahead of the third round.
