A MAN WHO was recently bailed on a rape charge found himself behind bars the same day he was released, after it was alleged that he attempted to steal a woman's handbag.
The accused, 26-year-old Silvern Ellis of Anchovy, St. James, who is charged with larceny from the person pleaded not guilty when he was brought before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate court yesterday.
GRABBED HANDBAG
The allegations outlined in court are that on September 29, the complainant and a companion were walking along Howard Cooke Boulevard when someone grabbed her handbag from her arm.
She reported that she saw the accused running with the bag. She raised an alarm and several passersby and motorists came to her rescue and apprehended him. A police who was on foot patrol at the time retrieved the bag.
It was revealed in court that on the day in question Ellis had just been released on bail for a rape charge that is before the court.
TOOK IT UP
He told Resident Magistrate Winsome Henry that he saw someone drop the bag and he took it up and that was when several persons surrounded him.
He was granted bail in the sum of $30,000 and is to report to the Amity Hall Police Station every Monday, Tuesday and Friday between 6:00 a.m and 6:00 p.m.
He is to return to court on October 19 when the case will be mentioned.
